Southwest Airlines Baggage Policy: What You Need to Know

This Baggage policy includes all the regular basic fares as mentioned below:

  • 1 personal item- No cost.
  • 1 carry-on item- No cost.
  • Carry-on baggage.
  • Charges will be applicable if the number of bags increases beyond 2 bags.
  • On overweight and oversized bag fees will apply depending on weight and size categories.
  • Charges will be charged on sports equipment.

Southwest Airlines Carry-on Baggage Policy

Passengers are allowed to carry 1 carry-on bag and 1 personal item (laptop bag, briefcase, and purse) free of cost.

Make sure the carry-on should be not exceeding:

  • 50 linear inches (24 x 16 x 10 in) or 127 centimetres (61 x 41 x 28 cm) including wheels and handles.
  • It should fit under the seat in front of you or overhead bin.
  • Your private items must be the right size to fit beneath the seat in front of you.

The mentioned items do not count against the “one-bag plus one personal-type item” limit:

  • A child restraint system for a youngster who has a ticket and a reserved seat, or when there is free space available.
  • You have various choices to bring mobility/assistance gadgets for people with disabilities with no limit.
  • Over clothes or other garments articles of clothing.
  • Must carry disposable packaging for consumption of food during flight.
  • Umbrellas and walking canes.

NOTE: There is no under-seat storage on Bulkhead seats, therefore, during take-off, all carry-on baggage must be stowed in the overhead bin.

Southwest Airlines checked baggage/ hold luggage Policy

  • 2 bags standard, under 10 bags.
  • Maximum dimension: 62 inches or 157 centimeters (length + width + height)
  • Maximum weight: 50 pounds or 23 kilograms.

Southwest Airlines Baggage Fee

Fees will be applicable if you carry more than 2 bags and the first two bags are free of cost. There will be no charges if you are an active US military personnel or a dependent.

Southwest Airlines fee for Excess Baggage

USD 75 will be charged per third bag or for any additional bag and Passengers travelling to/from Belize, Mexico City, Montego Bay, and San Jose, Costa Rica from November 16 through January 16 are limited to 2 checked bags.

Southwest Airlines Overweight Baggage fee

Charges on bags are applicable if their weight is more than 50 Pounds or 23 Kilograms.

  • 51 to 100 pounds or 24 to 26 kilograms: USD 75 extra per bag.
  • Checked Baggage/ Hold luggage will be not accepted if the weight exceeds 100 pounds or 46 kilograms.

Southwest Airlines Oversize Baggage fee

USD 75 will be charged on bags if their size lies between 63 to 115 linear inches or from 160 to 292 centimeters. Checked bags/ hold luggage will not be accepted if the bags are greater than 15 linear inches or 292 centimeters.

Southwest Airlines Sports Equipment Fee

Southwest Airlines accepts equipment based on their size and weight such as golf bags, fishing equipment, hockey, and lacrosse equipment but fees will be applied as per the counts.

CPAP Devices

Southwest Airlines Allows CPAP device. As they are not counted as carry-on and Advanced notifications are not required.
