Delta Airlines Baggage Policy: Guidelines and Allowances for Checked and Carry-On Luggage

Regular basic fares for Delta Airlines baggage policy include the following:

  • No cost for 1 personal item.
  • No cost for 1 carry-on item.
  • Carry-on baggage.
  • Fees will be applicable per bag with the increased number of checked baggage/hold baggage.
  • Charges will be imposed on overweight and oversize bags depending on the weight and size categories.
  • Passengers have to pay the fees on certain sports types of equipment.

Delta Airlines Carry-on Baggage Policy

1 personal item (purse, briefcase, laptop bag) and 1 carry-on bag is permitted without paying any fees.

Following size and weight restrictions on carry-on bags:

  • 45 linear inches (22 x 14 x 9in) or 115 centimeters (61 x 43 x 25cm) including wheels and handles.
  • Put in the available space under the seat in front of you or overhead bin.
  • Carry-on does not count items such as; a jacket, diaper bags, an umbrella, duty-free items, and assistive devices (wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, strollers, child restraint seats, etc)

NOTE: There is no under-seat storage on Bulkhead seats, therefore, during take-off, all carry-on baggage must be stowed in the overhead bin.

Delta Airlines Checked Baggage/Hold Baggage Policy

  • 2 Bags Standard and A maximum of 10 bags are allowed and passengers can take 4 bags maximum on a delta connection.
  • 62 inches or 157 centimeters (length + width + height) is the maximum dimensions.
  • 50 pounds or 23 kilograms is the maximum weight.

Delta Airlines Baggage Fee

Fees are applicable depending on the type of fare you purchased, and your destination if you have a Delta Airlines sponsored credit/charge card, if you are an active US military personnel and/or dependent, if you have a status with Delta Airlines’ frequent program, status, with an affiliated carrier.

Fees for standard checked baggage/hold luggage:

United States to the United States (including Puerto Rico):

  • USD 30 for the first checked bag.
  • USD 40 for a second checked bag.

United States to/from Canada:

  • USD 30/CAD 1 for the first checked bag.
  • USD 40/CAD 1 for a second checked bag.

While exiting Canada and converting to local currency 1 CAD base amount will be charged.

NOTE: one checked bag is limited for passengers traveling from Key West and Florida.

United States or Canada to/from Bermuda, the Caribbean, Central America, Guyana, and the US Virgin Islands.

  • USD 30/CAD 1 for the first checked bag.
  • USD 40/CAD 1 for a second checked bag.

While exiting Canada and converting to local currency 1 CAD base amount will be charged.

2 passengers traveling between Los Angeles, LAX, and Guatemala City, GUA, receive a waiver from the first bag cost.

United States or Canada to/from Mexico:

  • USD 30/CAD 1 for the first checked bag.
  • USD 55/CAD 1 for the second checked bag.

While exiting Canada and converting to local currency 1 CAD base amount will be charged.

United States or Canada to/from El Salvador and Ecuador:

  • No Cost for the first checked bag.
  • USD 40/CAD 1, 2 for the second checked bag.

2 passengers traveling between Los Angeles, LAX, and San Salvador Sal is USD 30 from the second bag cost.

While exiting Canada and converting to local currency 1 CAD base amount will be charged.

United States or Canada to/from Panama City PTY:

  • No cost for the first checked bag.
  • USD 40 for a second checked bag.
  • USD 30 is a must-pay amount as it is 1 basic economy.

United States, Canada, and Mexico to/from Tahiti:

  • No Cost for the first checked bag.
  • USD 100/CAD 1 for a second checked bag.

While exiting Canada and converting to local currency 1 CAD base amount will be charged.

United States, Canada, and Mexico to/from Sudan, Syria, Iraq, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan:

  • No Cost for the first checked bag.
  • USD 75/CAD 1 for the second checked bag.

While exiting Canada and converting to local currency 1 CAD base amount will be charged.

United States, Canada, and Mexico to/from Saudi Arabia, U.A.E., Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Iran, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Yemen:

  • No Cost for the first checked bag.
  • No Cost for the second checked bag.

Caribbean, Central America, and Mexico to/from South America (excluding Guyana):

  • No Cost for the first checked bag
  • No Cost for a second checked bag.

United States and Canada to/from South America (excluding Ecuador and Guyana):

  • No Cost for the first checked bag.
  • No Cost on the second checked bag.

United States, Canada, Caribbean, Mexico, Central America, and South America (excluding Brazil) to/from Israel:

  • No Cost for the first checked bag
  • USD 100/CAD 1 for the second checked bag.

Japan to/from Guan, Saipan, and Palau:

  • No cost for the first checked bag.
  • USD 40 for the second checked bag.

Delta Airlines Excess Baggage Fees

Fees as per the bag from third to tenth checked baggage/hold luggage:

US Domestic (including Canada, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and US Virgin Islands):

  • USD 150 for the third bag.
  • USD 200/CAD 1 for the fourth to tenth checked bag.

Caribbean, Central America, and Mexico:

  • USD 150/CAD 1 for the third checked bag.
  • USD 200/Checked for the fourth to tenth per bag.

United States, Canada, Mexico, Caribbean, Central America, and South America (excluding Brazil & Guyana):

  • USD 150/ CAD 1 for the third to tenth bag

North/South/Central America and Europe or North Africa

  • USD 285/USD 330/240 EUR per bag for the third to tenth per bag.

When leaving Canada or Europe, respectively, two basic amounts in CAD or EUR will be deducted and converted to local currency.

Brazil – To/From

  • USD/CAD/EUR 200 for the third bag to the tenth bag.

When leaving Canada or Europe, respectively, two basic amounts in CAD or EUR will be deducted and converted to local currency.

Delta Airlines Overweight Baggage Fee

Fees will be applicable on bags heavier than the standard 50 pounds or 23 kilograms.

  • USD 100 will be charged per extra bag if it is 51 to 70 pounds or 24 to 32 kilograms.
  • USD 200 will be charged per extra bag if it is 71 to 100 pounds or 33 to 46 kilograms.
  • Checked Baggage/ Hold Luggage bags exceeding 100 pounds or 46 kilograms will not be accepted.

Delta Airlines Oversize Baggage Fee

USD 200 will be charged for extra bags by Delta Airlines if they are from 63 to 115 linear inches or from 160 to 292 centimeters on US domestic flights. Checked baggage/ Hold luggage will not be accepted if the bags are greater than 115 linear inches or 292 centimeters.

Delta Airlines Sports Equipment Fee

Associated fees will be applied and Delta Airlines will accept sports equipment such as; skis, golf bags, fishing equipment, and hockey, and lacrosse equipment. Size and weight limits and will count as one checked bag/ hold bag.

CPAP Devices

Regardless of how long you decide to use the device as a carry-on, customers traveling with one of the permitted assistive devices (CPAP) must also have 150% of their real flight duration left in battery life.
